As Wilton Speight goes, so go the Wolverines

Many Michigan football fans still question Wilton Speight and some would love to see another quarterback under center.

However, I must admit, Speight played better than I expected last season. He was far from perfect and has a long ways to go, but he at least gives Michigan an NFL-caliber prospect at quarterback.

As a redshirt sophomore, Speight completed 61 percent of his passes, threw for 18 touchdowns and had just seven interceptions.

He had his bad moments, such as the entire Iowa game and the two interceptions against Ohio State that cost Michigan a shot at the Big Ten and National Championships.

However, he also hit a pass for a clutch touchdown on a fourth down in overtime against the Buckeyes and tossed a game-winning TD against Wisconsin, so he has shown he can make plays in big spots.

Last season, he made big plays but he was more of a game manager. In 2017, if Michigan is going to be really good, Speight is going to have to take a big step.

He’s the guy now. He needs to bring out the talent in the wide receivers and he needs to deliver when it matters.

If he can do that and be the quarterback Harbaugh thinks he can be, then Michigan might just surprise a few people in 2017.
