Michigan Basketball: NBA Weekend Roundup of Former Wolverines
By Adam Renuart
Tim Hardaway Jr., Atlanta Hawks
Hardaway was one of the main reasons that Michigan began to turn around their program. Continuing on the success of DeShawn Sims and Manny Harris, the younger Hardaway became a streaky shooter for the Wolverines.
Junior suffered a sophomore slump after shooting a solid 37% from deep his freshman year. He was at his best in his junior season, returning to 37% form while averaging 14.5 points a game. He was most notable for a breakout performance against Ohio State, keeping Michigan in the game with timely 3s.
Hardaway was drafted in the first round by the New York Knicks, impressing in pre-draft workouts. This proved to be a good call, as the son of Mr. Crossover made the NBA All-Rookie team. They increased his role in the second year, but soon traded him to the Hawks in exchange for the draft rights to Jerian Grant. Facing a logjam at wing, he competed for minutes with Kent Bazemore and Kyle Korver
Sadly, Hardaway had the worst weekend of the Wolverines as the Hawks took tough losses to the Jazz, Lakers, and Warriors. Hardaway wasn’t a factor against the Jazz or Lakers, though he did manage 10 against the Warriors. The Hawks are hoping he can revert to earlier in the season, where he had a stretch of 11, 20, 15 and 13 point games.
