Greg Mattison

Although Greg Mattison has already said he prefers being able to focus on specific position groups within the defense, it’s not safe to completely rule him out of the running to become Michigan’s next defensive coordinator.

Mattison is a well respected coach among fans, players and his colleagues. His contributions to Michigan during the late stages of the Brady Hoke era was really the only good thing happening for the Wolverines.

From 2011-14, Mattison’s defenses ranked in the top 20 in all but one season in total defense, pass defense and scoring defense. To put that in perspective, the Wolverines in 2010 ranked 108th in scoring defense, 110th in total defense, 95th in rushing defense and 112th in passing defense.

This season, as the defensive line coach, Mattison was able to put all his efforts toward sculpting one of the best defensive fronts in the Big Ten.

Michigan averaged 6.8 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks per game this season.

I don’t think it’s likely that Mattison moves back to running the defense, but he should be considered to be in the mix.

It’s also worth noting that he could move back to that role along with Greg Jackson, who did an excellent job this season with Michigan’s defensive backs.
