The Wolverines rode wave after wave of offensive pressure to pull away from Michigan State 4-1 on Friday night.

Michigan came out skating in the opening minutes and cashed in on their first power play chance, a deflected shot taken by sophomore defenseman Michael Downing.

The Wolverines fired 23 first period shots at junior net-minder Jake Hildebrand in route to 49 total shots for the game. Still, Michigan State was in the game for two periods after scoring their own power play goal to tie it – only to yield a 2×1 break that JT Compher finished with a 25 foot high slot wrister that beat Hildebrand high to his glove side.

The Wolverines sealed the game midway through the final frame as much maligned junior Boo Nieves came off the bench on a change in time to cruise down the slot and clean up a rebound past a sprawling Hildebrand.

Alex Kile completed the scoring minutes later with an absolute laser over the Michigan State goalie’s left shoulder.

Steve Racine, who stymied Michigan State in the two games he played this season, knocked away 26 of 27 shots in the win. He was solid, not spectacular, but played with confidence and poise.

The Wolverines will try to complete their run on Saturday against Minnesota, who shutout the Buckeyes, 3-0.

Adam Wilcox was outstanding in goal for the Gophers. Game-time is 8pm. The winner moves on to the NCAA tourney, although Minnesota is sitting 10th in the PWR and will earn an at large bid regardless.

Michigan playing for their NCAA hockey tournament lives tonight while Minnesota is likely in no matter the outcome of tonight’s game. If Michigan wins tonight they will be given the automatic bid for the tournament and Minnesota likely a getting an at-large bid sitting 10th in the power rankings. If Michigan loses tonight they are watching the NCAA tournament at home.

    Advantage Michigan.

Playing at Joe Louis Arena where Michigan has played quite a few times this season along with playing well over the years.

    Advantage Michigan.

Should be a home game like atmosphere with Michigan dominating the home fans playing at Joe Louis Arena with Ann Arbor in the background. We are sure the Michigan student section will be in attendance showing their support or as they like to call themselves Children of Yost.

    Advantage Michigan.

Michigan playing their third night while Minnesota playing for the second straight night.

    Advantage Minnesota.
