#4 Penn State (18-14-4)
The Nittany Lions proved last season that their young talent can play. This season they took another step forward going toe to toe with the conference heavyweights, dropping 3 games to Minnesota while taking 3 games from Michigan.
PSU pushes an aggressive offensive style and leads the conference in shots on goal. They are 6th in the country on the PP and 9th overall in scoring offense. First Team All Big Ten junior forward Casey Bailey (22-18-40) led the conference in goals and had help with the offensive load from sophomore David Goodwin (15-19-34.) Senior Taylor Holstrom (7-26-33) is the Lion’s top center but is injured and may not play in the tournament. Junior Eric Scheid (14-15-29) also was a top contributor to the offense. Forward Scott Conway was honored as a member of the All Freshman Team and coach Guy Gadowsky was named B1G Ten Coach of the Year.

Penn State rotated three netminders: junior Matt Skoff (7-6-2, 2.81 GAA and .907 save %), fellow junior P.J. Musico (6-5-1, 3.05 GAA, .909 save %) and sophomore Eamon McAdam (5-3-1, 3.13 GAA, .911 save %.) It is difficult to say who will get the nod in the tournament, but Musico has started three of the last four games against Michigan and Minnesota.
Penn State plays on the edge physically and likes to engage after the whistle. How they are allowed to play depends on what set of B1G Ten officials are calling the game. The Lions own a 1-3 record this season against their Thursday afternoon opponent, OSU, while also owning that same mark against Minnesota if they venture to the semi-final round.
Ex-factors: Penn State thrives on a hybrid style similar to MSU’s forecheck, but with much more emphasis on offense- with more talent to execute it. They have a mobile defense that activates frequently and their goaltending is adequate enough to keep them in games. Fall behind, like they did this past weekend at Minnesota, and it usually spells disaster against equally fast and talented teams. Their match-up with Ohio State will be an interesting, high scoring and potentially highly charged game with plenty of penalties.
