The Wolverines win Friday night at Yost Ice Arena, 3-0 behind stellar defense and rock solid goaltending from Steve Racine. The Maize and Blue garnered enough offense from their top line again, as Zach Hyman added his 18th goal of the season on the power play, banking a pass off a defender’s skate and past the Badger’s netminder.
Hyman also assisted on Zach Werenski’s third period tally that sealed it. J.T. Compher added an empty net goal. Racine turned aside 22 shots in out-dueling Wisconsin’s Joel Rumpel who was equally impressive.
Michigan moves into a tie with Minnesota in the B1G Ten and can move past them into sole possession with a win on Saturday afternoon thanks to Michigan State’s victory in Minnesota Friday night. Penn State also dropped their contest in Columbus, setting up a logjam in the conference race.

Wisconsin came out chippy from the start and Michigan answered with a patient attack after a sluggish opening period that saw no scoring. In the end it was Michigan’s power play and Wisconsin’s offensive shortage that combined for the victory.
Racine’s biggest save of the game occurred while the lead was still tenuous at 2-0 with just over two minutes to play, as he stoned a wide open Badger in the slot to preserve his shutout.
Michigan moved up to 17th in the PWR barely below the cut-line to make an at large appearance in the NCAA tourney. Five regular season games and the B1G Ten tourney will determine their fate.
Saturday’s game is an afternoon contest which will be televised on BTN (Big Ten Network) at 4:00pm eastern time.
