The Big Ten is Back, Baby

The Big Ten is Back, Baby
It started on Sunday, when rumors began to solidify: Harbaugh to Michigan. It continued through Monday night when media members witnessed Jim Harbaugh’s arrival to Michigan. The next day Jim Hackett introduced the new coach in a rousing press conference before Harbaugh was the center of a de facto pep rally at halftime of the Michigan basketball game.

It then spread across the country when Wisconsin beat Auburn in overtime and
Michigan State came from behind to shock Baylor
. Finally it exploded, spilling out over whatever container was trying to contain it. Ohio State, the team many didn’t feel deserved to be in the College Football Playoff and who was playing its third-string quarterback, beat mighty Alabama.
and the Bowl Game massacre of the SEC was complete. What is “it”, you are wondering? “It” is the Big Ten’s big week.
For a conference that has been a punchline of sorts, with more pride that production over the last decade, the Big Ten made a statement this week. Michigan grabbing Harbaugh out of the NFL and surely rescuing the storied Wolverines would have been enough to give the Big Ten a smile. Michigan being back means Michigan vs Ohio State is back, which in all honesty would mean the Big Ten is back. A huge step forward.

But then the most unlikely of unlikely events happened. You see, there are certain things that just don’t happen. Dogs do not decline food, Northwestern doesn’t make March Madness and Big Ten teams sure as hell do not do well in bowl games. Bowl season is when Big Ten teams wilt, as fans become desperate for any fellow Big Ten team to win, just to avoid the shame. But New Years Day of 2015 was different. Against real opponents (Baylor and Alabama especially, who were top five teams), the Big Ten not only put up a fight, they won the fight. Big Ten fans didn’t have to settle for “Well, at least we didn’t get destroyed by SEC Team A”, they instead beat two SEC teams and a (co)Big 12 champion.
Ohio State has a chance to win a National Title and Michigan fans mostly loathe that idea. But whether they beat Oregon or not, for the Big Ten’s sake, it doesn’t much matter. The Big Ten made a statement this past week. Michigan shouted from the rooftops that they are back. The Badgers, Spartans and Buckeyes heard these shouts and made some noise of their own. Now, that’s B1G.
