Media Report: Michigan “Confident” to Land Harbaugh, Could Be Imminent
Fewer than forty eight hours until the San Francisco 49ers’ final game of the 2014 season, it is clear that this will be Jim Harbaugh’s final game at the helm. What is becoming more clear is his future and the possibility that it will be spent in Ann Arbor.

have been out there that Michigan officials will be in the Bay Area to meet with Harbaugh this weekend, which is no surprise given that the
has already admitted their allowing of Michigan courting Harbaugh. Optimism has grown in recent days that Michigan does indeed have a very real shot at getting Harbaugh. He has been their guy and
despite his refusal to publicly acknowledge it
, Harbaugh reportedly has had growing interest in a return to his alma mater.
Friday night, Joe Pequeno of CBS 5 in Phoenix reported that a deal is in fact much more imminent than we had thought. Pequeno Tweeted twice, first stating, “Source says, 49ers and Michigan have worked out a deal. Nothing signed, but UM Officials feel confident Jim Harbaugh will be new coach”, then following up with, “Source says, Harbaugh will tell SF team after Sunday’s game and be introduced Tuesday. Once again, nothing signed, but UM confident.”
It is important to take this report with a grain of salt and to resist believing Michigan has landed Harbaugh. First, Pequeno is very deliberate in emphasizing that nothing is done or signed yet. He only uses the word “confident”, leaving definite room for doubt. Certainty is a privilege only afforded once a contract is signed.

Furthermore, with all due respect to Pequeno, the fact that a local, relatively unknown Phoenix reporter is the source breaking this story should be regarded with a certain sense of skepticism. This isn’t Adam Schefter, Jay Glazer or another trusted national reporter. I’m not saying Pequeno is wrong, however it is important to be cognizant of the rush to be the first media member to break a story.
The Harbaugh to Michigan tide has been gaining strength recently and at the very least, this most recent report just adds more strength to the idea. For NFL teams, the day after Sunday will be what is known as Bloody Monday. But for Michigan, the next day could perhaps be one of the brightest the program has seen in a long time. Stay tuned.
