Michigan Wolverine Football: Patience is Key For Coaching Search

There’s no question that Michigan has to get this right. They must hire the right coach who can not only start winning soon, but actually bring the program back to consistent national prominence. Michigan has to start challenging Michigan State and Wisconsin, before they can even dream of challenging Ohio State for the Big Ten.

These outcomes are all dependent on Michigan getting the right coach this time. And it has to be this time, because they can’t afford to be back in this spot in three or four years, like they have been after the Rich Rodriguez hire and the Brady Hoke hire to replace the Rich Rodriguez hire.
So while many fans and media members are starting to grow restless about the speed, or lack thereof, of this coaching search, it is essential to keep in mind that the best hire is better than the quickest hire. While reality is starting to set in that Michigan doesn’t appear to be making much progress in moving towards a hire, having a coach by Christmas seems optimistic.

At the same time, Michigan has been losing recruits over the last couple of months, with former four-star running back commit, Mike Weber, recently committing to Ohio State. Without a head coach in place at Michigan, there is no order, and that is concerning. The program can’t move forward until they hire a coach, a conundrum which might suggest the best move is to strike quickly and grab a coach.
But for a program that has seen the long term consequences of making the wrong hire following a haphazard coaching search, interim AD Jim Hackett knows that an thorough, deliberate search is necessary. That’s why Michigan hired search firm Korn Ferry to aid in the search.

This is the move that will define Hackett’s reputation at Michigan. A great hire will leave Hackett with the legacy of the man who turned around Michigan football at one of their lowest points. Whether they wait until January and lure Jim Harbaugh, steal Les Miles from LSU or surprise everyone with a wildcard choice, if it works out for Michigan, Hackett will be remembered well.
So while in the short run it is troubling that Michigan will be without a leader for perhaps an entire month, in the long run Michigan can’t afford another mistake. So for now, the only option for fans is to wait and see.
