Michigan Wolverine Football: It Is All About Process Now
Well, the obvious has happened, Coach Hoke was let go. I believe the decision was made a month ago, and a resistor capacitor slowed the whole process down to a maybe one last glimmer before Maryland. Hoke was not the lone factor and in this case many will feel the negative dominoes, picking up the bags and hitting new turf. That is the nature of college coaching and why it is better to be a Head Coach with more lovely parting gifts. He will most likely sit out and collect the dough next year, almost everyone would. There may or may not be attached conditions, contracts between agents and universities are not always purely uniform.. Hoke’s probably is, since he got the prize he wanted and was not going to rock the yacht.

Most of the guys on the team are young and were recruited by Hoke, this will make for a big collective sting. There probably are few on the team cheering as of now. Loyalty and commitment were qualities demonstrated by the coaches and infused into the team.
If I were Greg Mattison, I would leave, no questions asked, just take the money until it runs out and decide if he wants to go fishing or do one more gig. Coach Mattison espouses loyalty and he has seen this rodeo before. He would have no trouble finding employment if he seeks it. A lesser name guy who cannot bring in big name assistants may truly wish Coach to stay. Whatever, whomever better get some good defensive backfield play and at least one impact pass rusher.
If I were Doug Nussmeier, I would apply for any big offensive job that become available. He is probably mad at himself for placing trust in Michigan. This probably set back his track for a Head Coach position until he hits a place where his stock rises. Make no mistake, Coach Nussmeirer has tons of good qualifications. He, too, will find employment, regardless of what some of the great and offensive minds on this site state. Any seasoned observer could tell he had impediments that may be described as perhaps temporary but not fixable in his one year stint.
The rest of the gang may have lost their best shot at upward mobility within the ranks. This is the group of good guys who will have it rough in getting quick employment unless they have the right connection (and this in common).

No coach of note will take the Head Coaching job at Michigan in the current state within being given total control, at ease about the AD situation, and at ease about President Schlissel as well. Michigan is up against it and agents will point out vividly the flaws in Michigan’s structure. The question of whether or not Michigan higher ups will screw up the proceedings and final result may be unfair. Michigan may not have the choices many think. I think Jim Harbaugh is a dream, unless there is some heavy smoke and semi-untruths being put forward. A well what-ta you know, surprise moment could happen, but…….. you get the idea.
I think the big name college coach choice, sans the recently fired, is a sailing ship. This cannot be remotely confirmed but only placed forward by intuition and previous experience as to how these gigs play out, and the bet is Michigan’s admin’s will be irate about leaks, so expect no flow from the fort.
To me two viable choices remain, a hired NFL gun, or a big team coordinator. The bait must be big, and the bait looks like money, plenty of money. Logic, tradition, nice town, great kids, prestige, etc. all nice, but only money will get a big timer to bite. And I really would not have a problem with Bo Pelini. I think he could actually get some good kids to Ann Arbor. He did have some strong skilled players, but the overall roster was more Michigan like than Ohio State like. Only a few SEC teams have as much future NFL talent as the nuts possess.
And I got an email asking should RR be begged back? RR was on a spiral, he now has warm weather, California talent, lots of speed and Jeff Casteel. Casteel is worth, in my estimation, 10-14 points over RR’s prior coordinators who did not understand or really embrace the 3-3-5. Casteel makes great in game calls.

So, the process begins, Hoke was a lot nicer than some fired coaches. He understood university functions well enough to know consequences. Hopefully, Schlissel enhances the process and does not hinder it with his comments or actions. A guy like Hackett was probably promised full control and If the new power brokers within the trustees or the President muck it up ala some well known former opposition President, Hackett can cash in his chips and depart without regret. The lack of pressure may be a blessing, but again, Michigan may not have the choices some on here envision (as mentioned by Coach).
So, on a cold day, the frost hit the bloom. Good luck to Coach Hoke and the staff, this is the nature of coaching at this level and there is nothing to celebrate. Coach Brady Hoke displayed many good qualities of what moralists expect of a coach: loyalty, commitment, appreciation, better leadership than some perceive, love of players and parents, integrity, and a positive aspect. To this old coach, he fell short in a few other constructs besides wins, But that has been over-analyzed. As Paul Brown said, “Enough, move on.” And so the process, fast of slow, moves onward, and maybe even upward.
