Michigan Wolverine Football: A Look At Miami University

Big Time Legacy — Small Town Appeal

It is no secret that Miami University, known to some as Miami of Ohio, has a jaw-dropping legacy that has led to a long-standing moniker of “The Cradle of Coaches.” This once, somewhat exclusive and private school, has been part of the Ohio public university system for several years. The academic standards are high for a state school. Miami has a nice campus and sits in Southwestern Ohio, not far from Cincinnati. Long known as the Redskins, political correctness overturned the name to the current Redhawks.

The cradle of coaches description is mega-accurate. Following is a partial list of notable football coaches associated with Miami: Bo Schembechler, Paul Brown, Woody Hayes, Red Blaik (of Army fame) Ara Parseghian, Weeb Eubank, Paul Dietzel, Gary Moeller, Dick Crum, Bill Arnsparger, John Harbaugh, Sean Peyton, Bill Mallory, the legend of legends Sid Gillman, and a guy named Tressel.

The rich history has yielded a .630+ all time winning percentage. No other school can claim a coaching tree of this magnitude. There are some names in that list that are top shelf in any summary of college football. Sid Gillman and Paul Brown may be the two greatest innovators in football history. Both are candidates for the greatest offensive mind of all time. Schembechler, Hayes, and Parseghian are legends at three of football’s greatest programs.

The flow of Hall of Fame coaches has slowed down somewhat and Miami has hit hard times in the football theatre. Chuck Martin is the current head coach, having left the position of offensive coordinator at Notre Dame. The MAC conference is very balanced and the distance from the penthouse to the outhouse is short and quick.

The 2013 season ended with a very dismal 0-12 record, primarily a result of a defense that gave up 40 points or more to most schools on the schedule.

The Redskins have the most successful program in MAC history, but it will take time to dig out of the cellar. It is hoped that the hire of Martin speeds the process.

Michigan need not worry about Miami’s situation; there is enough concern on the side of the Maize and Blue. Michigan needs to gain control of this game early, go downfield, run two running backs over 100 yards and get ready for a very good Utah team. There needs to be some anger and an intense focus on improvement.

There should be no mystique in this matchup. Michigan need not create any, but instead start living up to the talent level on the roster.
