When you look back at the disappointing 2013 season, you might wonder who took the most abuse. Brady Hoke, Al Borges, Dave Brandon or Devin Gardner.
Gardner’s problems are easily understood. First, he lost 270 yards on 36 sacks and an additional 76 yards trying to run. The fact he was able to survive the Ohio State game was remarkable, let alone throw for 451 yards and four touchdowns. In fact, there are only two Michigan quarterbacks who have thrown for 450 yards in a single game. Gardner is both of them.
During the 2013 season, he averaged 247 passing yards per game, threw 21 touchdown passes against only 11 interceptions. Imagine what the numbers would have looked like if Gardner had some time to throw, or if the Wolverines had any type of running game.
Enough about last season. Michigan, for the first time in quite awhile, has three quarterbacks who can play. Shane Morris or Wilton Speight can give Gardner a breather without losing much.
Gardner has a good chance to break a few records in his final season in addition to winning some big games. With the development of the young offensive line and the emergence of some go-to receivers, the Michigan program can get well relatively fast. ♦
