Michigan vs. Kansas State — What Happened and What It Means — Part IV
Kansas State’s return game, aided by plenty of illegal blocks, some called and some not, gave the Wildcats instant field position allowing the offense any option desired.
There were some good moments last night. Jeremy Gallon now holds the single season Michigan reception record. This is a most deserved accomplishment. Jeremy has been a great Wolverine, in every regard. He has taken a pronounced life opportunity and achieved a degree to go with a great career, one where he started off as a “slow” also ran and progressed year by year. Jeremy’s success can be attributed to his work and effort, in short he become a self-made success and will leave a legacy that many will long remember. Hopefully NFL types realize he is a football player and not a prototype NFL specimen.
Michigan should have three players drafted out of the senior class, but plenty of youth remains. The ultimate question still is how the youngsters will progress. Lots of work needs to be done and much improvement shown in virtually every area before this team ascends.
The Michigan of old will not reappear until the offense can move the ball against decent or excellent teams and the Wolverine defense can force quick stops. The defensive players must stop looking like a misplaced fire drill to avoid those plentiful big plays opponents count on against the Michigan defense. 2014 started last night, and the question marks noted on this site back in the spring still remain, verbatim.
Not realized enough is the reality that the players are high quality and with only a few known exceptions represent the university very well in the classroom and in society. This used to be a paramount concern. But in today’s instant gratification society, wins for fan ego count the most. This group of players needs support as well as time for development. How to best develop the young squad will remain a matter of discussion, both for coaches and observers.
Last night was one game, a bowl game; the practice and preparation actually outweigh the final score. For Michigan, this game will further fuel the negativity of those who view losing as embarrassing, unacceptable, or intolerable. Fifty percent of teams lose a football game. There is no joy in losing, but slamming the university, team members, or coaching staff yields few positives. Brandon and Hoke will be the two parties that must meld decisions to assist improvement. Now the players will do what every other group does this time of year: get ready for classes, lift, have final evaluation meetings, and plan for spring practice. Such is life and things move on, hopefully forward.
It is safe to say that the status quo will be disturbed. To what degree becomes a rational
