GBMWolverine: Michigan Football — Do not Forget about Team 133 — Five Things to Look Forward to Seeing

The blogosphere, Twitter-verse and various Southern Michigan talk radio stations have been buzzing about the successes of Head Coach Brady Hoke and his coveted recruiting class for Team 134; however, I would like to remind all Michigan fans not to forget about Team 133!

With the Spring Game coming up on April 14th, along with spring practices starting this weekend (March 17) here are five things that Michigan football fans should look forward to seeing.

Denard Robinson in his final year as a Wolverine

I expect Robinson to have a better grasp of the pro-style offense that Offensive Coordinator Al Borges installed last season that helped Michigan win 11 games. Robinson was shaky at times last season under center, but heart-racing and storied finishes were something that he did not keep away from his fans. Not to mention, Robinson is very close to grabbing a few more of those all-time Michigan record thingies that past M players have failed to keep out of reach.

How valuable were David Molk and Mike Martin in the trenches for U-M?

I will come out and state right now that it is going to be impossible to replace two of the greatest linemen in Michigan football history. Both Center David Molk and Defensive Tackle Mike Martin were cornerstone pieces for Team 132 and were solely responsible for pulling out a few wins in the Big House in 2011. For example, it was Martin’s safety against Purdue that ignited Michigan’s momentum and the eventual onslaught of touchdowns that came afterward. Anyone disagree with that notion? We will find out how valuable the two linemen truly were in the upcoming 2012 NFL Draft, aside from their absence in Michigan Stadium on Saturdays; however, I would hate to be the two players that replace those bruisers in the fall.

Urban Meyer is back…and vengeful

Meyer finally landed his dream gig—well, at least one of his dream gigs. Shout out to Notre Dame!—and he has not been twiddling his thumbs. He has been burned at the stake by fellow B1G coaches for inappropriate recruiting tactics and he does not care what you, your favorite team’s head coach, or your school thinks about the matter. Oh, and the U-M/OSU rivalry? Yah…that is still going on. Meyer is now using recruiting materials that explain how an education at the school from Ohio is superior to an education at Michigan. Hey, Urban, it’s on. Do not make me tell your daughter on you!

Urban Meyer had a few players at Ohio State wear lavender jerseys.

The freshmen 25

So, why do you feel that you would be a good fit for our organization? Coach Hoke has added 25 new men to the squad and four of them made an appearance on ESPNU’s top 150-recruit list. Attrition was good for the Wolverines during this off-season with the team only losing a handful of key contributors in guys like Kevin Koger, Mike Martin, David Molk, and Junior Hemingway; however, the coaching staff is not against playing a player who is inexperienced. Take Blake Countess as an example. The young man came in as a true freshman and contributed in many ways for Defensive Coordinator Greg Mattison and the Michigan secondary. Who will be the Blake Countess for Team 133? I am giddy with excitement waiting for that answer.

No need for brunette girls on kickoff this season

The NCAA has adapted its kickoff rules to mirror its big brother’s rules in the NFL. Kickoffs will now be kicked from the 35-yard line and will increase the likelihood that a touch-back occurs especially since the second kickoff rule states that a touchback will be moved out to the 25-yard line instead of the 20-yard line. Although I can infer that the excitement of kickoff returns may decrease this coming football season, I am almost possible that if Michigan Kicker Brendan Gibson gets an opportunity to boot the kickoff, he will not need to think about brunette girls before doing so. He is primarily an accuracy specialist on field goal attempts, but, overall, kickoffs will just be that much easier now…

Michigan fans, you can have your excitement now about the recruiting class for Team 134 right now, but remember that exciting things are happening during THIS season and that you should not overlook any second of it!
