GBMWolverine Grade Card for Position Groups: Wisconsin vs. Michigan

Note: GBMWolverine hereby tenders a small disclaimer, more of a reminder, to our readers. Some of our guys, maybe all actually, are pretty tough on game grades. We watch the game and later go back and further dissect the action, looking for details that a lot of fans miss or overlook when watching a game.

Again, here is our grading scale, simple but typical, intended to provide a general summary judgment based on specific instances collectively observed.

A = Great – everything went well, execution was very notable.
B = Good – success was achieved but nothing was exemplary.
C = Average/Okay – a normal day with ups and downs.
D = Poor/Need Help – a clear weakness, obvious problems.
F = Hope and Pray for a great recruiting class at that position.

Here are the grades for the Wisconsin game.

Offense:

There were 442 yards total, but the bottom line is this was a too little too late effort. The team had a shot to make a run and the interception killed that chance. What is being trumpeted as an elite offense was shut out in the 1st half. There were two TO’s, the ball was put on the ground three times and one interception.

Grade: C-

Quarterback’s:

132 yards rushing, one interception and some missed open receivers.

Grade: C

Running Back’s:

53 yards rushing and 1 pass caught is not good enough to provide a second option needed to compete against good teams.

Grade: C-

Receiver’s:

18 receptions, but too many key drops and blocking was not as good as needed on screens.

Grade: C-

Offensive Line:

185 yards rushing, but two sacks, two tackles for loss, and Wisconsin had consistent pressure. In our opinion Wisconsin won the battle at the LOS.

Grade: C-

Defense:

Wisconsin offense dominated the game with 48 points and 560 yard of total offense, even with taking the air out of the ball in the 2nd half.

Grade: D

Defensive Line:

Wisconsin’s O line against Michigan’s D line was the story of the game. Martin made some very impressive individual plays, but who else had a shining moment? Wisconsin owned the game and the LOS. A whooping 376 yards rushing was given up and Wisconsin had a rarity of two running backs gaining over 150 yards.

Grade: D

Linebackers:

Combined for 25 tackles, but none for a loss and no sacks. The coverage has not been very good and Wisconsin knew that in gaining big chunks between the layers of defense (linebackers and deep guys).

Grade: C-

Defensive Back’s:

Missed plenty of tackles even though in better position, lost contain, did not get off blocks, were chasing wide open receivers, all of this is another way of saying not very good.

Grade: D-

Special Teams:

Ouch, a missed FG that hurt, inconsistent returns and coverage, and the punting was inconsistent; just ugly for a major college team. Saving some grace were some decent returns.

Grade: C-

Some grades may be a little harsh and some a little kind, and some may argue that Wisconsin is a super team and some weighting should be allowed for this factor. But keep this in mind, is supposed to be Michigan.
