Wolverines Hockey Update: Michigan Sweeps BGSU & USNDT
Coach Red Berenson earned his 700th and 701st victories this past weekend as Michigan toppled Bowling Green by scores of 4-1 and 4-2. On Tuesday night, Michigan hosted the USNDT and rolled to a systematic 3-0 victory buoyed by Bryan Hogan’s solid goaltending.
On Friday night, Michigan shook off a mid first period power play goal by BG’s phenom Jordan Samuels-Thomas and posted two late period goals by Matt Rust (PP) and David Wohlberg to take a lead they never relinquished. Kevin Lynch added the third tally, and second PP goal of the night just inside the first minute of the second period to stake Michigan’s lead to 3-1. Jon Merrill offered an assist on the play as well as Louie Caporusso. Carl Hagelin closed out the game with an empty net goal. Michigan had to fight off a total of 8 penalties for 16 minutes. Shawn Hunwick stopped 17 shots to earn his first victory of the season. Michigan outshot the Falcons 33-18 in the contest, including a 16-4 advantage in the first period.
The Wolverines expected a more difficult game on Saturday, and came out flying, as David Wohlberg scored his second goal of the season at the 0:11 mark of the first period. Defensemen Jon Merrill (1st career goal) and Brandon Burlon also scored in the frame before BG added a late PP goal to tighten Michigan’s margin to 3-1. Louie Caporusso extended the lead to 4-1 scoring a shorthanded goal at the 5:00 mark of the second period off of a 2×1 break with Carl Hagelin. Samuels-Thomas scored his second goal of the series minutes later to send both teams off after 40 minutes with Michigan leading 4-2. Play was ragged in the second and third periods as Michigan took 25 minutes and 19 minutes in penalties respectively, including two HFB majors assessed to Scooter Vaughn in the second period and by freshman defenseman Mac Bennett in the third period. Michigan was forced to kill off two 5×3 advantages. Bryan Hogan stood tall, though, knocking away 16 of the 18 shots sent his way. BG was 1of 9 on their PP chances, while Michigan was 1 for 5. Matt Rust had to leave the game in the third period after an apparent leg injury.
On Tuesday Night, Michigan scored two first period goals by Brandon Burlon and Louie Caporusso to help grind out the 3-0 victory. Luke Glendening iced the game in the third period with a late period tally. Freshman Derek Deblois earned two assists in the contest. Caporusso also had a helper on Glendening’s goal. Bryan Hogan stopped 33 shots in what was a rather wide open, yet tepid game between the two teams. Michigan peppered the U-18 team with 47 shots.
#3 Michigan (2-0-1) now prepares to travel to #9 New Hampshire (1-1) for a Saturday night non-conference heavyweight tilt.
