Mailbag question: Who are the top 5 players from the 2010 recruiting class

Hey guys,

Who are the top 5 players from the 2010 recruiting class in your opinion along with what do these players bring to the table to help Michigan.

Thanks for the question.

We are basing this off who Michigan signed in February not who will show up because we don’t know if every player is on campus right now or has been released to the general public.

We have linked this to our “recruiting” section in the menu bar as well in the drop down tab 2010 Commitment Class.

This group filled many holes that were missing from the previous recruiting class. GBMWolverine believes this was a good, solid class that will (excepting Demar) help down the road. UM did miss on a few recruits that would have helped at key positions.

Here are five players from signing day that our staff contends will help the UM team. There certainly are more that will eventually be a positive force on the team, but at this time we wanted to limit it to five because of length.

1) Devin Gardner:
Devin is the type of quarterback we at GBMWolverine have wanted Michigan to recruit, especially now that the offense has settled into a run-oriented spread offense. Devin is a tall, strong-armed passer with enough athletic ability to keep defenses honest with his feet. Every team needs a potential difference maker at the quarterback position, and there is a strong likelihood Michigan found one.

2) Demar Dorsey:
Demar would have been the best athlete in this class. The only reason he was not #1 is our longstanding bias to quarterbacks and the critical importance of a great quarterback in this offense. Demar has the type of skills to play cornerback or deep middle safety. These were both big areas of need this spring from our practice observations.

3) Richard Ash:
Richard is an excellent defensive tackle prospect with enough explosion and athletic ability to provide the inside push Michigan has been lacking. A team can never have too many quality defensive linemen. In our opinion games still are, and always will be, won at the line of scrimmage.

4) Jibreel Black:
Potential edge rushers are always at a premium at the college level, especially at Michigan where such entities are currently lacking on the roster. With the pass rush being one of our biggest concerns on defense, this recruit is a major need filler.

5) Marvin Robinson:
If edge rushers were not the biggest need, the secondary depth would be. Michigan still is struggling at safety and even cornerback. Marvin could fit at all three safety positions — free safety, bandit, or spur.

*** Note ***
Losing Demar Dorsey hurts this class for obvious reasons, he was the highest rated defensive player in this class, in fact, the highest rated recruit in the Big Ten. Demar was a recruit at a big position of need and depth. As such he certainly would have played almost immediately. So, after the smoke and dust have settled, somebody must step up and be ready to play at a high level.
