Michigan Football: Mailbag Question — Players getting into Trouble

What is going on with some of the players these days and getting into trouble?

Does it seem like more kids are getting in trouble or is it because of more media covering it all. Also is it true that “back in the day” that the local police would actually call the head coaches up and work something out so it didn’t go public and that is another reason why you see more kids in trouble?

Isn’t it true that the athletic dorms are no longer either because some programs took advantage of the system and made the athletic dorms a lot better than the regular dorms for the students. Seems like if all the players were in one area then a lot less stuff would happen, but that is just me.

Players have been getting into trouble since football started.

Media scrutiny is definitely a factor. So is fact that these the police and other authorities get involved more often.

Regarding the media coverage nowadays. You have web sites that follow the teams and recruiting daily along with new blog pages just like this one that cover Michigan along with other teams around the country. Seems like every year people get more into following the daily life styles of their football team or whatever college sports they follow.

In the day when players got in trouble, police would not file report and simply allow Coach Bo to deal with players. Nothing police would do could compare to what Bo was doing. The police are not as “friendly” to the local teams like they use to be “back in the day” where the coach’s and local law enforcement were almost like buddies to help keep things quiet.

Another factor is amount of players living off campus. Courts ruled that student athletes could live off campus and schools had to pay for these apartments. With so many athletes being off campus leads to less supervision. Twenty year old with limited supervision usually equal trouble. Back when they were able to have the complete football team in one dorm building they could keep a closer eye on them a long with setting curfews and knowing when they were coming and going and who was stopping by as well.

Like anything else from stadiums, practice facilities, academic support, etc. things have gotten out of hand and that included dorm rooms for football players or the entire athletic campus. Some college programs were making them over the top and that could be another advantage when recruits are looking for a college to attend.
