Michigan Football: Mailbag Question — about Kevin Newsome
Hello Guys,
In the past week it was announced that Virginia Tech is pulling a scholarship offer from a QB recruit over some legal problems the kid was having.
Prior to Newsome declaring his intent to Michigan, he was pretty much considered “in the bag” at VT. So, my question is, how strong a verbal is he to us? Can/will we keep him?
Thanks in advance for your response,
Tom T

GBMWolverine Response:
We believe Michigan will keep him, but as you know if you have followed college football recruiting … Never say never.
He loved his visit and got along with the recruits and players at Michigan. Along with seeing the new facilities that are coming Michigan’s way in the next few years. His parents seem to really like the campus, the area, and the coaches.
We believe that Kevin Newsome sees what he can do at Michigan and the opportunities that lie ahead of him. Everybody always gets on egg shells especially when you have two top rated quarterbacks in the same class. It seems that it doesn’t bother either one of them along with both seeing this as a idea of competing for playing time and making the team better.
Will this change as it gets closer to signing day? Possible, but Michigan fans can need to take the attitude of Coach Rod’s where he believe you continue to recruit these guys until they sign their LOI papers. As Coach Rod said earlier in the year “when a kid commits to a team that just tell you who you need to beat now”. Always take a look if a recruit is keeping in touch with other committed players from his team along with seeing if he is interested in taking any other official visits. If he is interested in other programs you better start worrying and probably either pick up your recruiting effort or start looking for a replacement because in most regards when a commit starts looking around he usually doesn’t come back a lot like women in that aspect.
Ideal solution for Michigan fans would be that Steven Threet does play quarterback this year and does well and they can either red-shirt both Beaver and Newsome or just work them into the game a little bit. Don’t forget Feagin either, but he is a guy that could possible play other positions as well if he gets behind either of the ’09 commits.
We are starting to look at recruiting differently now and figure if a kid does not want to be here then we aren’t going to loose sleep over a kid picking a different school.
One thing about it once they arrive on campus you want them to stick around for the 3, 4, and 5 years. The only time you want them to leave early is for the NFL. You do not want to see a lot of transfers or players quitting. Looking at our new program it has a lot more dedication from the players to play at Michigan. These kids have to be at the winter conditioning along with the summer conditioning. They are spending a lot more time dedicated to Michigan football and that puts less time for school, social, and just being a normal student-athlete. So you need to be 100% that you want to be here especially with the workout program under Mike Barwis.
