Michigan Wolverine Football: Spring Football — Just Some Thoughts

I think most of us are in agreement that the quarterback position is the biggest question mark going into next season. During the spring, all three quarterback’s have had some very good moments and some issues. However, a couple of things to keep in mind.

All quarterback’s are really getting coached. A huge amount of time is being spent teaching.

As questionable as our quarterback situation is, a year ago, we knew who our quarterback was going to be and the quarterback play last spring was much worse than this spring. The only difference in most posters eyes was Devin Gardner was just so athletic, no matter how many mistakes he made, he would simple just overcome those mistakes by his athletic ability.

Well, we saw how that worked out. I feel must more confident in this staff’s approach.

Offensive line, there has been some discussion about the play of our offensive line a year ago. And while I agree, it was not up to Michigan standards, lets make sure we analyze the offensive line play by reviewing the film. A couple of things stand out.

The offensive line was all of a sudden substantially better once Drake Johnson became our primary running back. In fact, the last few games of the season, Michigan was much more efficient in the running game than passing game.

Our quarterback play got substantially worse as the season progressed and quarterback play can make any offensive line look worse.

  • Note:
Going into next season, I think Tim Drevno will not only upgrade recruiting, but the existing players at Michigan will be much better. Already seen signs of improvement, especially with Kyle Kalis and Ben Braden.

One player who has been very good in the past few practices in Dymonte Thomas. Is he finally starting to get comfortable at safety?

A player who may be down on the depth chart, but in scrimmages just keep getting better is Jaron Dukes. Dukes is huge and needs to really get stronger, especially in his hands, not overly fast, but just has a knack of getting open.

    Joe Kerridge can really block.

Becoming a big fan of Mike McCray. While Michigan needs to get more athletic at linebacker, McCray and Ben Gedeon at least gets us closer.

I just do not see how they keep Bryan Mone off the field, might be the main reason we see Willie Henry lining up more and more at defensive end.
