Michigan Wolverine Recruiting: Erik Swenson 2016 Commit (OT) Profile

GBMWolverine Readers: Here is a overview of University of Michigan verbal commitment Erik Swenson.

Every college program seeks the stud left tackle. Such a player can solve a lot of problems and benefit an offense and quarterback immensely. There are many good left tackles, but when the smoke clears only a few earn the title great. The first thing needed at left tackle is size. At somewhere between 6’ 5” and 6’ 7” and over 275 pounds as a high school junior, Erik Swenson passes the size test. Someday he will have prototype offensive lineman size. His strength and movement skills are still in the developmental phase.

For stat gazers, Swenson is a mid to high four-star recruit. That is pretty good territory heading into senior year.

Swenson’s recruiting cycle was short, he committed to Michigan in November of 2013. There were not many offers due to his early commitment. Notre Dame and Ohio State both offered as well as in state Northwestern and Illinois. So, with offers that quick from Northwestern, Notre Dame, and Michigan, academics must be sound.

Erik Swenson will have a chance to progress from semi-raw recruit, to the starting line-up, to left tackle, and to success. The road is long and improvement is a must to reach high levels.

Rankings:

24/7: 4-star.
ESPN: 4-star.
Rivals: 4-star.
Scout: 4-star.

Note: Stars do matter, but are not absolute in predicting success within a football program. So, with that in mind the GBMWolverine Staff has cleverly come up with a new system of ranking. We are using footballs instead of stars, how can one argue against a system that clever? Below are the interpretations of football power predicted way too boldly long before it matters. In other words, we will give informed opinion with the crystal ball and let the players determine what will happen through years of hard work.

Criteria: Raw talent, athleticism, position of need, intangibles.

GBMWolverine Rankings:

10 footballs: Instant impact player.
9 footballs: Three or four-year starter at a high level.
8 footballs: A starter with all league potential.
7 footballs: A meaningful starter at some time during a career.
6 footballs: A spot starter or special teams player.
5 footballs: Not in the two deep after a two years.
4 footballs: Never made it.
1-3 footballs: See the above.

We have him at 8 to 8 1/2 footballs.

Side Note:

Remember just as we did during the season with grading positions or groups we are very tough graders and expect a lot out of those positions or players so this is no different here.

  • Overview:

Erik is a core 6 athlete with the size and skill to be a plus (positive overall play) left tackle at Michigan. Core 6 is a well-known athletic training group in Illinois, Swenson’s home state. A four-year starter at left tackle for Downer Grove, Illinois, Erik will most likely get a shot at left tackle at Michigan. If left tackle does not work out he has the size and skill to play right tackle or be an interior linemen. No GPA was listed.

    Strengths:

Erik has a superior combination of size and athletic ability; he has the long arms and good, quick feet to be an outstanding college linemen. At times Erik shows that nasty edge needed to play in the trenches, but he does need to show it on a more consistent basis. Erik definitely shows the aptitude to move people and even dominate the line of scrimmage. He also shows good knee bend and overall agility.

    Concerns/Needs Work:

Erik needs to add strength and some weight. The good news is that he has the frame to do so. Erik will also need to refine and improve his technique. Things like hand placement, punch, and footwork will need an upgrade. Elite edge high school pass rushers were a challenge at times.

Red-shirt or play his Freshman Year?

GBMWolverine believes he will likely red-shirt his first year especially with having Mason Cole handling the left tackle position.

Erik reminds the GBMWolverine Staff of — Former Michigan and Detroit Lions Football Player — Jeff Backus — who played left tackle.

    Final Thoughts:

We welcome Erik Swenson to Michigan and hope he has a successful career on and off the football field as a student-athlete at the University of Michigan. Go Blue!
