Michigan Wolverine Football: Miami at Michigan — What May Happen

Put yourself in the position of the Michigan coaching staff and ask this question: what should happen Saturday at the Big House?

There is the obvious: win. There is another obvious improve and start to show corrections for flaws that have plagued Michigan football for years.

1) Which offensive linemen combination presents the best chance of running the ball?
2) Which play schemes and formations increase the chances of running success?
3) What plays beyond the off-tackle and flooding a strong side may work?
4) How can speed be implemented into the game plan?
5) Is the read option series worth the injury risk?
6) How can the ball be spread out in the secondary better?
7) What is the best front seven combination on defense?
8) Why are the blitz packages coming up short and what can be done to change that result?
9) Can the cornerbacks play physical enough and with enough technique to continue press coverage?
10) What group of linebackers can best get to the gap assignment effectively?

More than using a score as a barometer, Michigan must answer these questions.

There are two themes at play:
1) The time for development of players.
2) The pattern that our leopards are not changing their spots. The team needs to come out under control and take matters into account, then just show that there is confidence and competence.

Both traits are needed and both were missing for most of the game against Notre Dame. There also need not be fickleness among the fans. If the players come out of tunnel and touch the banner, then lend support to the players who chose Michigan.

It would make perfect sense for Coach Nuss to be stubborn and run the power play series. It would make sense to run some hot reads because Miami is loading the box and bringing some heat. It makes sense for the defense to have, as must goals, the forcing of turnovers, as the yearly total is zero. It makes sense for the defensive staff to demand that the quarterback is not only hurried but also sacked.

What is asked for is easier than answering the first batch of questions. What to do if certain players are just not advancing the cause is purely a coaching decision; no other input is solicited.

Hopefully this is a step forward, but Utah awaits.

Prediction:
Miami 13
Michigan 42
