Michigan Football: Tidbits from MaizeMan — Younger Players — Defense

This is a small sample of MaizeMan’s post on the message board.

Younger Players: Defense

Lewis has been the best CB in practice. I know we have 2 returning CB’s, but neither have the athletic talent of Lewis. Lewis can make plays and he is playing with a great deal of confidence right now.

Nov 2, 2013; East Lansing, MI, USA; Michigan State Spartans wide receiver Tony Lippett (14) makes a catch against Michigan Wolverines defensive back Jourdan Lewis (26) during the 1st half of a game at Spartan Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Mike Carter-USA TODAY SportsJeremy Clark, a name we forget, but I impressed with him in spring when he got some reps and I continue to be impressed in bowl practices. He is big and hits, the knock is can he pass protect. Keep an eye on him in off-season it is not out of the question that he starts next fall.

Thomas, as of now, he is playing nickel, but they are using him as a focus on the defense at times including letting him get after the QB. When he rushes, he is quick (and since the majority of snaps, UM basically plays nickel, it is like he is a starter. Not sure if he starts in bowl game, but I think he gets more snaps.

Hurst, Mattison really complimented Hurst, just want to point out I have been reporting that I am on the Hurst bandwagon all year. This kid is an athlete and can move eventually I think he is an impact player.

Nov 30, 2013; Ann Arbor, MI, USA; Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback Braxton Miller (5) is tackled by Michigan Wolverines linebacker Ben Gedeon (42) in the second quarter at Michigan Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY SportsGedeon, already talked about him in past, but to me, he is already ahead of Morgan in terms of ability to make plays. Just needs to be able to read offense better and not get trapped or lost (of course we could say that of all of our LB’s).

Poggi, he has had some on and off injuries, but when he practices he is one of our best freshman.

Strobel, he is getting large number of snaps in bowl practices and looks good.

Hill, another Safety to watch, kid is big and strong and competes.
