Michigan Football: Coach’s Corner — Who Should the Wolverines Play

The question is easier than the answer. You just can’t pick up the phone in modern BCS football and say let’s play and the other guy says, ok. The teams that changed leagues will be filling up schedules quick. It may be tough to get what some want in 2015 and 2016. The choices can be lumped together in four groups. First, teams that would crawl to Ann Arbor for the money and the exposure, and hope to be the next Appy State. These teams would likely be one and done. This category is broad and name your favorite out of teams like Appy State, bottom tier MAC, and southern schools with talent like LA- Monroe, etc.

Second, attractive first tier mid majors like the top of the MAC, western schools like Fresno, San Jose State, San Diego State, academy teams and some of the melting Big East. There are tons of teams here as well, but the scheduling chances decrease. Third, is middle of the road teams out of conferences above the MAC, like MW, Conference USA types. Houston and the new kid on the block, Texas State, are possibilities. Fourth are BCS teams of all caliber. This could range from Kentucky to Alabama; from Florida State to Maryland, from Oklahoma to Missouri, and from Stanford to Syracuse.

Mandatory Credit: Rick Osentoski-US PRESSWIREIf it were me: I would start off in 2015 with a sure schedule and my choice would be a new MAC team, say Ohio, the real Ohio, and turn it into a battle of the bands, a battle UM would have to practice hard to win. Then in 2016, go for a name team with some value in scheduling, one that may get a two for one deal. My choices would be schools like BYU, Maryland, Louisville, Missouri, or Pittsburgh. The big boys like Oklahoma, Florida, Southern Cal, etc. would squeeze something out of UM to play, at the bare minimum a one for one fair exchange.

Anyone wondering about Boise needs to remember that the two for one deal with the Sparties is over a long time period, and such is the difficulty of pulling off such a venture. Quick and attractive to me beats long term and drawn out till the Grand Canyon cuts to the Earth’s mantle.

Brandon is calculated and will not spasticly rush into a bad deal. But he may not get what he wants. ND has chosen to isolate Michigan and Michigan needs to never give this group such an opportunity again. Put the baby to bed and throw out the dishwater; win the last game of the series and let them know about it for eternity plus five years.
