Michigan Football: Coach’s Corner — Jibreel Black — Defensive Line — Wolverine’s Spring Football — GBMWolverine Evaluations

GBMWolverine Football Spring Evaluations: Position-by-Position — Player Profile.

GBMWolverine readers: Here is a brief overview of Jibreel Black and GBMWolverine’s analysis concerning his progress this spring in our opinion.

Note: We will not evaluate every player on the team and with this position group (Defensive Line) we will not evaluate #67 Nathan Brink. If you would like to chat about this player bring them up on the message board or send us an e-mail request.

Reminder: Also noted that we didn’t attend every practice and realize things happen during those fifteen practices, but our evaluations are based on what we seen first hand and in our opinion and not what we hear like just about every other site out there that relies on second, third hand information to make their evaluations of the players during the spring.

Losing from 2011 (Team #132) on scholarship: #39 Will Heininger, #53 Ryan Van Bergen, #68 Mike Martin, and #95 Chris Rock who has left the program.

Coming in for 2012 (Team #133) on scholarship: Willie Henry, Ondre Pipkins, Chris Wormley, Tom Strobel, Matt Godin, and Mario Ojemudia.

Commit for 2013 (Team #134) on scholarship: Henry Poggi, Maurice Hurst Jr., and Taco Charlton.

Jibreel Black is a junior defensive tackle from Cincinnati, Ohio. He is short and somewhat undersized in general, but his forte is speed. As football followers are aware, Black has moved inside and Roh has moved to strong side defensive end.

From observations of spring practices, GBMWolverine views the coaching move of Black to the 3-technique position as having good potential.

Black could provide needed penetration on the line for 2012. And he showed an ability to be disruptive at times battling against the first team offense. Of course, we would like to see more penetration from the other defensive linemen as well, but our assessment is that Black seems to be fitting in and will fulfill his role.

Due to his size, the ultimate test may be how well Jibreel does against some of the bigger; more physical offensive linemen Michigan’s defensive line will face this season. The wait will not be long as the season opener at Alabama is fast approaching. It is well documented that the Tide has some of the best offensive linemen in the country. This game will be a huge test not only for Black but also the entire defensive line, one that replaces three starters and was the strength of the defense last season.

It should be interesting to see how Black is used this season and how Coach Mattison handles the defensive line. Will he go into the game thinking that as a defensive coordinator he needs to throw the kitchen sink at a team like Alabama to try and get some type of pass rush on the quarterback to force him into making decisions early? But Mattison’s pattern is to sit back early and see how the defense does and rely on the back seven. We believe Coach Mattison will send pressure frequently and may live and die by the blitz in an effort to try and stop Bama’s offense.
