Jyaire Hill was so close to being the villain for Michigan this week. A boneheaded penalty when the Wolverines had Oklahoma pinned on their own 1-yard line gave Oklahoma the momentum it needed for a touchdown drive to knot the game at 10-10. Minutes later, he was the hero the Wolverines needed.
Seeing Hill's penalty honestly just makes you shake your head. He was nowhere near the play, and you could see his thought process. He saw the play in front of him, looked at the Oklahoma player, thought for a second, and then, for no reason at all, chose to hit him, drawing the unsportsmanlike penalty, giving OU a free 15 yards and a first down.

The Sooners went on to tie the game on that drive, getting another free 15 yards and a first down from a facemask penalty on Dom Nichols that wasn't as egregious as Hill's. However, Hill never gave up on defense, and that helped him make the game-changing play for the Wolverines.
The Wolverines got pressure on Oklahoma QB John Mateer all day, causing him to throw the ball early or simply make poor decisions in the passing game. His biggest mistake came midway through the fourth quarter as Hill redeemed himself, undercutting the route and picking off Mateer for a big return, setting up Michigan for the ensuing go-ahead touchdown that would be the difference in the game.

Michigan winning the turnover battle vs. Oklahoma made all the difference
In Week 1, Michigan lost the turnover battle, and even though the Wolverines came through with the miracle win, that was the one dark spot for Michigan's defense. Defensive coordinator Jay Hill and his squad faced more adversity against the Sooners than against the Broncos, but they did win the turnover battle, and it ended up being the difference in the game.
Not only did Hill get the turnover, but the return after set Michigan up perfectly for the easy score. Hill spoke highly about the defense in fall camp, stating the pillars of greatness he needed from his unit, one being the turnover battle. Hill wanted to always win the turnover battle in every matchup, and today his squad delivered in a crucial moment.
Jyaire Hill's interception was big, but really the defensive line for the Wolverines needs the most love after the big upset. Guys like John Henry Daley, who finally emerged as a star on the field, Nichols, and Nate Marshall made life very difficult for Mateer throughout the entire game, which led to the turnover.
Michigan's defense once again was the star of the show, but the offense was able to close the door with key scores, and Hill was ultimately able to redeem himself in the end.
