The Michigan football defense was great in 2024. It would have been even better if Rod Moore didn't suffer a season-ending injury last spring.
It hurt losing Will Johnson for most of the season. Colston Loveland too. But don't underrate the impact of Moore who would be in the first-round pick conversation right now if he was healthy in 2024.
Ari Wasserman of On3.com recognized how talented Moore is by naming him as a Preseason All-American along with Ohio State's Caleb Downs. Downs is the best safety in college football but when 100 percent, Moore isn't far behind.
Moore is an eraser on the back end, a sure-fire tackler, and a ballhawk. He can do it all and the Ohio native has also never lost the Buckeyes. The Michigan football safety has 141 career tackles, seven pass breakups, and six interceptions, including the game-clincher against Ohio State in 2023.
Michigan football secondary will be a strength
Whether he plays safety or nickel or some combination of both, the secondary will get a huge boost from the return of Moore. Some other pieces have departed but Brandyn Hillman is in line for a starting safety job after a stellar showing in the bowl win over Alabama.
Hillman is one of the hardest hitters in college football. He'll be a fan favorite. TJ Metcalf, who transferred from Arkansas after intercepting three passes last season, will be another quality player, while cornerbacks Zeke Berry and Jyaire Hill should each be solid starters.
Berry found a home at cornerback and there hasn't been any chatter about moving him. He was really good on the outside down the stretch. Hill just needs more seasoning. He had moments in 2024 and should take a leap, plus you have top-100 freshman Shamari Earls, as well as Jo'Ziah Emond, waiting in the wings.
Much of the focus has been on the Michigan football defensive line heading into next season. But the secondary should be just as talented and it's just another reason to be over-the-moon excited about the potential of this defense in 2025.
