Urban Meyer's constant support of Kyle Whittingham won't go over well with Ohio State fans

The former Ohio State head coach seems to be very excited for new Michigan head coach, Kyle Whittingham, and his outlook on the 2026 season, which may rub Buckeyes' fans the wrong way.

The Michigan and Ohio State rivalry runs deep, and fans on both sides don't need me reminding them of that, but it seems like former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer might need the reminder.

While Meyer has typically in the past been all over Michigan, typically jumping at the opportunity to bash the Wolverines when he can, he hasn't done so as of late, especially with Kyle Whittingham in the head coach position. Whittingham took over for Meyer when he left Utah for the position at Florida, and the two have been close ever since both were with the Utes.

When Whittingham took the job at Michigan, Meyer even said it was a "no-brainer" that the Wolverines hired him. That sounds like he is praising Michigan, if you ask me. Even recently, on his podcast "The Triple Option," Meyer spoke about how excited he is to watch Whittingham at Michigan, especially when they take on Oklahoma in Week 2, when Big Noon Kickoff will be in town.

"It's my boy Kyle Whittingham, I can't wait to watch up close and in person with all his stuff going on," Meyer said.

Ohio State fans might have a problem with Urban Meyer's praise of Kyle Whittingham, but Michigan fans have to love it

Urban Meyer and Kyle Whittingham have a long past, and if that upsets Ohio State fans, then so be it. Honestly, it wouldn't be a surprise if it did, because that is just how those fans are, but that isn't going to stop Meyer from hyping up 'his boy' Whittingham.

While Meyer's loyalties will always lie with Ohio State, and when The Game comes around, he will be on the side of the Buckeyes, he is still going to support his former coach and longtime friend. Meyer has given Whittingham a lot of props for what he has done so far at Michigan, and boy, that one could not have made Ohio State fans happy either.

Honestly, when it comes to Michigan fans, they have to love seeing a former Ohio State legend hype up Whittingham now that he is with the Wolverines. Meyer will probably say a lot of great things about Whittingham when he is in Ann Arbor for the Oklahoma vs. Michigan game, when Big Noon is on campus.

It is clear that Meyer isn't going to let the rivalry affect his friendship with Whittingham, which is very different from what happened when running backs coach Tony Alford made the switch from Ohio State to Michigan. Meyer knows the value of his friendship with Whittingham, so Ohio State fans are just going to have to get over it.
