Semaj Morgan is a really talented player, but Michigan football has to put him on the bench, at least for a week.
Morgan, a junior, was a three-star recruit coming out of high school, a high three-star. Morgan made an early impact with the Wolverines and helped Michigan win the national championship, despite fumbling a punt return in the Rose Bowl.
Morgan had 22 catches that first season. He also rushed for 67 yards and scored four touchdowns. He had one touchdown last year (139 yards receiving), and has 19 receptions for 214 yards in 2025.
Morgan has also been Michigan's primary punt returner. Yet, in both capacities, he's struggled. Last week, Morgan dropped a pass, got in the way of Justice Haynes on a long run that could have been longer, plus some weird fair catches that cost Michigan yards.
His drop late in the second quarter, on a dime by Bryce Underwood, just has to be caught. It could have given Michigan a realistic chance to get points. Morgan also had a drop late in the second quarter against Wisconsin that would have gone for a huge play, maybe even a touchdown.
Morgan is a talented player when Michigan can get the ball in his hands. The problem is he drops it so much that it's hard to do. Fans have been grumbling and surely, Morgan is feeling the heat.
Sherrone Moore should take him off the field. At least at punt return. It's too important. But maybe sitting for a week would clear his mind.
At this point, it might be worth it. There has to be accountability. Michigan needs to take Morgan off the field, not for the entire season, but at least for this week.
This team is good and the margin for error is too small. The Wolverines can't allow themselves to lose a game because the same player repeatedly made the same mistakes.
