All-time series record: Michigan leads 25-17-1
Most recent meeting: Michigan won 45-14 in 2019
First meeting: Michigan won 26-6 in 1888
Largest margin of victory: Michigan 38-0 in 2003 & 2007, Notre Dame 31-0 in 2014.
Michigan vs Notre Dame is a rivalry that I loved growing up as a kid. I grew up just outside of Chicago so there was no shortage of fans for both teams in my hometown and surrounding cities. I also grew up with two older brothers who were fans of the Irish, which meant this game was circled on our calendars every year growing up.
Favorite game from the series: Michigan 47, Notre Dame 21 in 2006.
The 2006 version of this game is one of my favorite Michigan football games of my lifetime. The 11th-ranked Michigan Wolverines traveled to South Bend to take on the second-ranked Irish in a week three matchup. Michigan outclassed Notre Dame from beginning to end in this game. Prescott Burgess intercepted Brady Quinn on the very first drive of the game and returned it for a touchdown to give Michigan the early lead. Mario Manningham abused the Irish secondary all day, totaling four catches for 137 yards and three touchdowns. Michael Hart added 124 yards on the ground and leaped through the air for the second Michigan touchdown of the day. Michigan forced six turnovers during the game, leading them to a 26-point rivalry victory.
Future outlook
Michigan football will once again take on Notre Dame in 2033 as they have a home-and-home matchup scheduled for two years. Notre Dame, unfortunately, decided not to renew the rivalry after the 2019 game, so it will be a fourteen-year gap between the times these two teams have met when they square off during the 2033 season.
College football is a better place when these two teams meet, and I hope the rivalry continues on a more frequent basis in the following years after they meet next.
