Not many fans saw a 7-5 season coming from this talented Michigan football team. However, that is where we find ourselves at the end of the 2024 season. Another thing Michigan fans never could see coming was the joy we would all feel following a season that saw our team lose five games. It was an up-and-down season full of twists and turns. Let's take a look back at some of the top moments that we will always remember as fans.
Best game: At Ohio State
Michigan football went into Columbus and beat Ohio State 13-10 in the biggest upset in the history of the rivalry. There is simply no other option to put here other than this one. Michigan was a 20.5-point underdog when the ball was kicked off on Saturday and they proceeded to upset the Buckeyes on their own turf.
With everything that has happened in this rivalry over the past five years, this one felt especially sweet. The Michigan football team and coaching staff have a clear advantage over Ohio State and it was on full display on Saturday. We heard all week from Ohio State fans how they were going to pour it on this Michigan team and they would finally get their revenge. Michigan controlled the line of scrimmage and won the rushing battle 172 to 77, marking the twenty-third straight time the team who won the rushing battle also won the game.
The fourth quarter was kind of an encapsulation of this game for the last four years. Michigan controlled the ball for 13:03 compared to Ohio State's 1:57. Michigan had 101 yards of total offense compared to Ohio State's 10. Most importantly, Michigan scored three points and they shut Ohio State out. Kalel Mullings provided us with one of the most memorable runs in the history of this rivalry when he broke two tackles on the 3rd and six that set up Michigan inside the Ohio State 20-yard line late in the fourth. A fantastic game for all Michigan fans that we will be telling our grandkids about one day.
Best Play: Kalel Mullings fourth quarter run vs USC
Kalel Mullings had a remarkable season for the Michigan football team this year. He finished the season with 185 rushes for 948 yards and 12 touchdowns. Michigan was trailing USC late in the fourth quarter with 2:24 left on the clock. They needed to convert a third and one from their 21-yard line. I remember hoping to just the first and then figure out what to do next afterwards. Instead, Kalel broke one open for over sixty yards that set us up for a first down at the USC 17-yard line. He would eventually go on to score the game-winning touchdown on a fourth and goal from the one-yard line. This was the best and most exciting play of the 2024 season.
Top performance: Defensive line vs Ohio State offensive line
This was a really tough one to decide on but at the end of the day, it had to be the defensive line vs Ohio State. They completely dominated them from start to finish. Ohio State was determined to run the ball at them but Mason Graham and company never gave an inch. Time after time, they found a way to get pressure with four in the passing game and to stonewall them in the run game. A masterpiece by a defensive line that was the best in the country all year.
