Savion Hiter was one of the most anticipated players for Michigan this season, coming in as a five-star running back out of the Class of 2026. Well, it took a few games, but the young freshman finally found the end zone for the Wolverines against UTEP, and he didn't do it just once, but twice!
It makes sense that Hiter needed some time to get used to the pace of college football; it is definitely different from high school, especially at the power conference level. Each game, hiter has seen his usage grow in this Michigan offense, and with starting running back Jordan Marshall dealing with a few minor aches and pains, it was the perfect time to put the run game in the freshman's hands.
After getting behind 7-0 to the Miners, Michigan drove down the field, and on second and goal in the second quarter, Hiter bullied his way into the end zone for the first score of his career.

Now, it wasn't all sunshine and rainbows for Hiter because on the Wolverines' next offensive possession, the next carry he got, Hiter fumbled the ball deep in UTEP territory. The Miners recovered the ball and went on to score again, giving them a 14-7 lead and worrying Michigan fans.

How a player responds after adversity says a lot about his character and ability to move on to the next play. Hiter probably wasn't happy about the fumble, but ultimately, it didn't stop him from continuing to have his best game as a Wolverine in his young career.
Hiter continued to be the workhorse for the Wolverines, continuing to produce when his number was called. Hiter found the end zone again in the third quarter after the Michigan defense continued to get stops, this time after Marshall went down with an injury and limped off the field. That is the kind of response you want from your freshman, especially after seeing the lead guy go down.
For a young player, Hiter responded to any adversity very well today, even finishing as the Wolverines' leading rusher with 62 yards on 11 carries and two rushing touchdowns. This is the type of performance you want to see out of a five-star recruit, especially this early in the season.
Hiter has delivered on the hype he had before the season began, showing toughness on the field, running through defenders, but also the patience to let a play develop and keep his feet moving at all times. Michigan has had its fair share of five-star duds, but so far, Hiter is proving to be a great pickup for the Wolverines, and it's only been three games.
