Rising sophomore lighting it up in Michigan fall camp with pick sixes

Lack of cornerback depth could be an issue for Michigan football but not if Jo'Ziah Edmond takes a sophomore leap in the 2025 season.

One of the biggest question marks about the Michigan football team, at least on the defensive side of the ball, is cornerback depth.

The Wolverines feel good about their starters, Zeke Berry and Jyaire Hill. But there have been questions about the depth behind them. Caleb Anderson, a transfer from Louisiana, could be in the mix as the No. 3 cornerback.

However, there are two former four-star recruits also battling for playing time at cornerback, including Jo'Ziah Edmond, who signed with the Wolverines in the 2024 class out of Indianapolis, Indiana.

Edmond is 6-foot-1, 180 pounds, and played in eight games last season for Michigan football. Coming out of high school, he was ranked No. 263 overall in the 2024 class, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings.

Edmond felt like a diamond in the rough. He didn't make a huge impact on defense last season, but he's turning heads during fall camp. Berry, who is expected to start at cornerback for the Wolverines, told reporters on Friday that Edmond is one of the players who is "stepping up." He also said that Edmond has notched multiple pick-sixes during fall camp, via Brice Marich of The Michigan Insider.

Four-star freshman Shamari Earls, who flipped his commitment from Georgia to Michigan in 2025, is another name that's in the mix at cornerback. He's 6-foot-2 and was ranked in the top 100 overall. Some have suggested he could have a similar impact to that of Will Johnson.

We'll see how the depth chart shakes out, but with Anderson, Earls, and Edmond all getting positive buzz in fall camp, it feels like one of Michigan's biggest needs has been satisfied.
