Head coaches matter or they wouldn't get paid so much money. Michigan football won a national championship, in part, because it got Jim Harbaugh away from the NFL and kept him for nine seasons.

As long as we all wanted Harbaugh to stay in Ann Arbor, coaching the Michigan football team, we were fortunate for the time we had, and the championships won by the Wolverines.

I didn't know if I would ever see Michigan win another national championship, but Jim Harbaugh did that. Now, he's back in the NFL and Sherrone Moore is the new head coach. Moore isn't going to be Harbaugh, who is one of the great head coaches the game has ever seen.

But Moore can still be damn good. He's already proven he can handle coaching in the big games. He coached Michigan to win in a pair of top-10 showdowns, one even at Penn State. Moore outcoached Ryan Day in 'The Game' too. Michigan football went for it on fourth down three times and got it all three times. He also ran it 32 straight times against Penn State because he was worried about the Nittany Lions pass rush.

Moore still has a lot to prove this season. CBS Sports just released its ranking of Power-4 head coaches and Moore was 52nd on a list of 68 head coaches. However, due to his inexperience, that's actually a lot higher than usual.

“We don’t typically see first-year coaches start this high in the rankings, but Moore isn’t your typical first-year coach,” CBS analyst Tom Fornelli wrote. “He served four games as head coach last season thanks to Jim Harbaugh’s various transgressions and won them all, including victories against Penn State and Ohio State.

“Plenty of coaches are ranked ahead of him without wins that impressive, but it’ll be interesting to see how Moore performs as captain of a ship coming off a national title.”
