According to the Blue Chip Ratio released annually by Bud Elliott of 247 Sports, Michigan football is one of 16 teams that can actually win the national championship.

Elliott has been doing the Blue Chip Ratio since 2011 and no team has won the national championship with a blue-chip ratio (percentage of recruits who are 4-star and 5-star prospects) under 50 percent.

Florida State was at 52 percent during the 2013 season when they won the national championship. Clemson also won in 2016 with a blue-chip ratio of 53 percent. The Wolverines had a 54-percent Blue Chip Ratio last season which was the third-lowest of any team to win the national title since the Blue Chip Ratio was created.

The data collected is according to the 247 Sports composite rankings and compiles data over the previous four recruiting classes. Michigan has some solid hauls over the years and while they aren't No. 1 like Ohio State with a 90-percent Blue Chip Ratio, Michigan is ranked 15th.

What's interesting is that Michigan football has a 56-percent Blue Chip Ratio coming into the 2024 season which is better than last year. Michigan doesn't have as much blue-chip talent as Georgia, Ohio State, and Alabama, but that was the case last season too.

The X-factor was better coaching and an elite quarterback in J.J. McCarthy. i would also say elite play in the trenches has also aided Michigan football a lot. So even though there have been a lot of changes, Michigan still has the talent to compete for a national title and a head coach who went 2-0 in top-10 games last season.
