Sherrone Moore creates and hires new position for Michigan football staff
Sherrone Moore has done an impressive job building a coaching staff for Michigan football, especially after seeing so many coaches depart for the NFL.
With the way the college game is right now, the NFL is an easier job. You don't have to recruit or worry about NIL or losing your best players every single year. There is free agency in the NFL but at least there are contracts. In college football right now, it's a one-year deal for everybody.
With the hire of Lamar Morgan, it appears that the Michigan football coaching staff is set, although we are still waiting for official word on Mike Hart.
However, off-field positions have become increasingly important in college football. On Saturday, a new hire for Michigan football was announced for a new position as Zach Higginbotham announced he would be joining the Wolverines as Director of Sport Science.
He said he would have a hybrid role for the Wolverines. Higginbotham was previously the Applied Science and recruiting coordinator at Cal.
I'll be honest, I don't know much about sports science. But I do know a key piece of what the Wolverines were able to do the past three season relied on player development. Ben Herbert was a huge part of that.
Justin Tress, his understudy, has taken over as the director of strength and conditioning. This hire is a new wrinkle and it's another player-friendly part of the program similar to something you would see at Alabama.
More and more teams are getting this type of person in their program and it's good to see Sherrone taking Michigan into the 21st Century in terms of off-field staff for recruiting and otherwise.
