Michigan football suffers another blow as Steve Clinkscale leaves for NFL
Just when you thought Michigan football was inching toward some actual stability this offseason, the Wolverines suffered another blow on the coaching staff as Steve Clinkscale is leaving the Wolverines for the Chargers according to Sam Webb of The Michigan Insider.
This is a reversal as Clink told the players and coaches he was staying earlier this week. Jim Harbaugh was after Clink but money appeared to be an issue. However, it seems like that hurdle has been cleared and Clink, like Ben Herbert, is leaving, just like Mike Elston, Jay Harbaugh, and Jesse Minter.
We still have no word on Mike Hart and the entire defensive coaching staff will now be turned over. Wink Martindale was a solid hire. But he's not going to do well recruiting and the Wolverines just lost their two top recruiters on that side of the ball.
Sherrone Moore has his work cut out for him
Plus, key players in the secondary and defensive line lost their position coaches. Michigan football had three straight top-20 pass defenses under Clink and frankly, the writing was probably on the wall when he was passed up for the defensive coordinator job.
Hopefully, that was the right move. If Clink was promoted to DC, there would be still continuity and now, outside of the scheme, there won't be any of that on defense. I trust Sherrone Moore and believe he was right man for the job.
But he needs to hit a home run in terms of the defensive line coach and the secondary coach because if the new assistants don't mesh with Michigan football stars and lose players enter the transfer portal, the 2024 season could turn into a rebuild quickly.
