The Michigan football program lost a quarterback to the transfer portal on Thursday, but it's probably not a name many Wolverines fans will be familiar with.

Jack Grusser, a three-star quarterback recruit in the 2023 class, who flipped his commitment from Harvard to Michigan football -- joining the Wolverines as a preferred walk-on -- announced that he has entered the transfer portal on Thursday.

The move makes sense for Grusser. He's clearly got the talent to play college football somewhere, probably at the FCS level, but it was also clear that he was never going to see the field for Michigan football.

Even after J.J. McCarthy declared for the draft and the Wolverines embarked on a five-way quarterback battle that features Alex Orji, Davis Warren, Jack Tuttle, Jayden Denegal, and top-100 freshman Jadyn Davis. Grusser wasn't mentioned and it was hard to see him ever being a starter or backup.

“You know, I did a lot of hard thinking after my season as to what I truly wanted and what I truly wanted to do with my career,” Grusser told the Wolverine when he committed. “I’m entrusting myself and I believe in myself that I can play with the best. I feel like I was kind of under the radar originally, having not done a lot of camps and having an injury during my sophomore year. So I know I can compete with the best.”

The Wolverines didn't sign another 2023 quarterback so it was a smart move for both sides. But Grusser will have to go elsewhere if he wants to compete for a starting job in 2024.
