Fall camp for Michigan football starts on Wednesday and on Tuesday, defensive coordinator Wink Martindale met with the media.

Martindale is the "Godfather" of the defense that Michigan football used the past three seasons and helped the Wolverines win a national championship.

Of course, every defense is different and the person calling the plays is a big part of that. Michigan football fans remember the days of Don Brown and there has been a lot talk about Martindale being another Don Brown, something he has rejected.

New Michigan football DC is an "aggressive playcaller"

However, he said he's going to be aggressive on Tuesday and that being an "aggressive playcaller" has helped his teams win a lot of games.

“We’ll control the narrative of it,” Martindale said via The Wolverine. “Am I an aggressive playcaller? Yes. I’m an aggressive playcaller. We’ve won a lot of football games calling games aggressively, OK? When it doesn’t work, that’s when everybody says, ‘He’s blitzing too much.’ You don’t hear that at all when you win, you hear but how ‘creative’ you are. You just don’t listen to any of that.

“We’ll find that right mix of pressure, simulated, all the other stuff. We’ll find the right mix, and that’s what training camp is for.”

Martindale said he believes in man-to-man coverages but that the idea that Michigan football won't play zone coverage anymore or as much was "all speculation."

I'm excited to see what Martindale can do and the expectations are high. He's one of the highest-paid defensive coordinators in college football and has multiple first-round picks to work with.

There are no excuses, but after coming from the NFL, I'd be stunned if Martindale was anything like Don Brown.
