Michigan football aims to flip Iowa commitment in 2025 class
Even though programs offer recruits all the time, the official offers for college football go out on August 1st and there was an interesting Michigan football offer reported by kicker Scott Starzyk.
The Wolverines don't always recruit a kicker, but there tends to be one in most classes. Sometimes, it's a scholarship player and other times, it can be a preferred walk-on.
But in the 2025 class, Michigan football is after a five-star kicker (not according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. Kickers have a separate recruiting ranking -- the Kohl's kicker rankings.
Starzyk is out of The Woodlands, Texas and he's ranked as the No. 1 kicker in the 2025 class. He's also the fourth-ranked punter in the 2025 class. Starzyk has been committed to Iowa for a couple of weeks (July 18th) but the Wolverines have jumped in the mix as Starzyk posted an offer from Michigan football on Friday.
If some Michigan football fans question offering a scholarship to a kicker they shouldn't. You don't want to have more than one or two scholarship kickers/punters at a time but sometimes, it can't be helped.
Dominic Zvada just transferred to Michigan from Arkansas State. He's a junior and would have two years of eligibility left. Tommy Doman also has two years to play. So there would be some overlap if Michigan football was able to flip Starzyk.
But he sounds like someone who has the ability to kick and punt, which is valuable in a pinch. But after watching Jake Moody and James Turner work, special teams shouldn't be an afterthought.
Turner is one of the reasons Michigan beat Ohio State and that's why even though Starzyk isn't a highly-ranked prospect, it could be an important commitment, if U-M is able to get it.
