Michigan basketball put together an impressive haul from the transfer portal this offseason but new head coach Dusty May might not be finished.

The Wolverines still have one scholarship spot open. There have been rumblings about Michigan wanting another transfer and we found out who the interest is in after Jamir Watkins of Florida State withdrew his name from the NBA draft on Wednesday night.

Watkins, a 6-foot-7 wing, was projected as second-round pick. He spent his first two seasons at VCU before playing for Florida State in 2023-24. Watkins was easily the Noles best player and led the team in scoring (15.7 ppg), rebounds (6) and steals (2.1).

The playmaking wing would be an intriguing option and according to Trilly Donovan, Michigan basketball and St. John's are expected to be among the contenders. Watkins could be the best player still available in the portal, so other teams could emerge. This could also turn into a bidding way, but the Wolverines make a ton of sense.

A perfect fit for Michigan basketball

Watkins averaged just under two assists per game. He also averaged 0.8 blocks. He's got enough length to play some small-ball four for the Wolverines but could be an ideal starter at the three. Watkins shot 34 percent from 3-point range last season and 45 percent from the field.

May hasn't shied away from playing multiple guards and could even use a lineup of Watkins, Tre Donaldson, Roddy Gayle, Rubin Jones, and Vlad Goldin or Danny Wolf. A 6-foot-7 wing would at least give Michigan another option if teams are looking to attack guys like Wolf or Sam Walters.

Getting an NBA-level prospect back for another season of college basketball is the dream so if you add Watkins to a Michigan team that some think should be preseason top 25, and you could really have something in Ann Arbor next season.
