Michigan baseball beats Iowa in extra innings in Big Ten tourney first round
Michigan baseball survived its first-round matchup of the Big Ten tournament thanks to a 3-2 win over Iowa, which happened thanks to a 10th-inning walk-off walk on Wednesday.
Mitch Voit drew a walk with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th inning, which was enough to give Michgan baseball the all-important first win in the Big Ten baseball tournament.
The first game is important because of the way the 8-team, double-elimination bracket is set up. If you win your first game, you are just one win from the semifinals and being the first team to clinch that spot on your side of the bracket means your opponent has to beat you twice.
Michigan will play Penn State on Thursday night at 6 PM CST for a berth in the semifinals after the eight-seeded Nittany Lions upset Illinois, the Big Ten regular-season champion.
Kurt Barr got the start for Michigan baseball and exited the game with the score tied at 2-2 in the seventh inning. The Wolverines scored two runs on a passed ball in the sixth. The game went to overtime after both teams were scoreless in the eighth and ninth innings.
Iowa was called out on a play the at the plate in the 10th and Denner got the win after pitching nearly four scoreless innings. Michigan was able to load the bases in the 10th before Voit drew a walk to score what ended up as the game-winning run.
Michigan baseball is 31-26 overall and will play Penn State on Thursday night.
