Jyaire Hill has solidified himself as CB2 for Michigan football
Michigan football had a few position battles going into camp and one that many fans have been watching is the cornerback spot opposite of Will Johnson.
Jyaire Hill, a former top-200 recruit and 2023 signee was probably the preferred cornerback of the coaching staff, especially after some spring transfer portal departures.
However, the Wolverines still added some depth via the portal with the additions of Aamir Hall of Albany and Ricky Johnson of UNLV. Both players have done well. Hall definitely sounds like he'll be the first cornerback off the bench or the first guy used in sub packages and that's because, according to what Moore said on Monday, Hill has effectively won the job.
Sherrone Moore praises Michigan football CB Jyaire Hill
“He’s really taken a hold of that position and done a really good job,” Moore said via The Wolverine. “‘Sug’ has been phenomenal, tough … just a gritty dude.”
Hill is 6-foot-2 and he's a really talented man-to-man corner. Of course, he can do more than that and he did see action in seven games last season, but it's going to be a big jump for him into the starting role.
On the plus side, Hill held down the job during the spring and played well. He built on that during the fall and has taken the leap you hope to see out of a second-year player.
Like the others on the Michigan football roster, Hill has to secure his job throughout the season but he's earned the start against Fresno State in the season opener and I would be surprised if Hill relinquished the job.
