There is one Michigan basketball target in the transfer portal who hasn't gained a ton of traction on social media as a top target of the Wolverines. However, that might need to change.

It was reported this week that Michigan basketball has been in touch with former Notre Dame power forward Carey Booth. The 6-foot-10 forward signed with Notre Dame as part of the 2023 recruiting class but entered the portal after a disappointing season for the Irish.

Notre Dame was really young. Booth was an example of that. He played 20 minutes per game as a freshman. He struggled at times and shot 39 percent from the field overall as well as 29 percent from 3-point range. However, the talent is evident.

A new transfer target to watch for Michigan basketball

Booth was ranked 57th overall according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. He's also ranked as a top-50 transfer by 247 Sports. Michigan basketball isn't the only contender. Texas, Illinois, and Ohio State are all in the mix according to Davis Moseley. The Michigan basketball insider is also reporting that Booth is expected to visit Ann Arbor next week.

New Michigan basketball head coach Dusty May has been a workhorse so far. But with his FAU players, especially the ones that declared the draft, the decision process could take longer. Danny Wolf and Connor Essegian have received plenty of attention from May, but Booth is really interesting.

Booth only shot 29 percent from deep but had nine games with at least two triples. He had one game with four makes from beyond the arc. In the right system and the right offense, Booth could shine. May's system showcases bigs who can shoot, sort of like John Beilein, so that should provide ample opportunities for Booth, especially in ball-screen actions.

The fact that he's a freshman would make the transfer a no-brainer from an admissions perspective, especially coming from Notre Dame. He could also be a multi-year piece in the rebuild for Michigan basketball. U-M will have plenty of competition for Booth, but there's lots of upside if May can convince him to join the program.
