How to watch, what to know for Michigan baseball in Big Ten tournament
The Michigan baseball team closed out the regular season strong and earned their 30th win of the season on Friday but still lost the final Big Ten series to Indiana.
At 30-26 overall, Michigan baseball has improved in the second season under head coach Tracy Smith. The Wolverines wound up 14-10 in Big Ten play and enter the week as the No. 4 seed for the Big Ten tournament in Iowa.
The tournament will start with three games on Tuesday starting at 10 AM CST. Michigan will square off against Iowa on Wednesday at 2 PM CST. The two teams met for a three-game set during the regular season and the Wolverines took two of three games. If Michigan baseball wins, they would face the winner of Illinois and Penn State on Thursday at 6 PM CST, or 10 a.m. CST on Thursday if they lose.
Kurt Barr and Jacob Denner will lead the way for the Wolverines on the mound. Stephen Hrustich has 14 homers to lead the Wolverines including six in his last 12 games. Collin Priest, a freshman, has caught fire lately and was Big Ten Freshman of the Week recently. Mitch Voit has been stellar as a pitcher and hitter for the Wolverines. He's got 61 hits and 20 doubles. Kyle Dernedde has also been vital as an everyday shortstop and hasn't missed a game.
One thing is for sure is that Michigan needs to win the Big Ten tournament, like it did two years ago, to make the NCAA tournament. Getting that first win is important but it takes three in the winner's bracket to reach the championship round.
All games will be shown on the Big Ten Network.
