Breaking down Michigan football national championship odds for 2024
The Georgia Bulldogs were the last college football national champion to repeat and it's something that Michigan football will have the chance to aim for next season.
Michigan football finished the 2023 season 15-0 but it also lost 10 of 11 starters on offense, as well as a bunch of defensive starters, in addition to losing head coach Jim Harbaugh to the Chargers and the entire defensive coaching staff.
Sherrone Moore is now the head coach after serving as acting head coach for three games this past season, winning all three. That stretch included wins over Ohio State and Penn State -- two teams ranked in the top 10.
Moore was the clear choice to replace Harbaugh and after what has transpired over the past 30 days, Michigan football fans should feel even better about the selection of him as Harbaugh's replacement.
Despite a 30-day transfer window being opened after Harbaugh left, Moore didn't lose a single starter to the portal. Keon Sabb would have started or been in the top three in the safety rotation but Alabama offered a more appealing situation.
Yet, keeping guys like Will Johnson, Mason Graham, and Kenneth Grant is huge. The same can be said about Donovan Edwards. There is a spring window and players could still transfer out if they wish, but it feels like Michigan football dodged a bullet.
That says a lot about Moore and his ability to recruit. He recruited quality assistants to join his staff and the ability to get the buy-in of the players was huge. So Michigan football isn't going to drop off as much as expected.
Michigan still has the sixth-best odds to win the national title in 2024 according to FanDuel. The Wolverines are at +1500 tied with LSU. Georgia (+300), Ohio State (+480), Oregon (+700), and Alabama (+850) are the four teams ahead of the Wolverines.
