Another crazy stat about Michigan football draft production
Some college football programs are known for developing certain positions. Michigan football is known as EDGE U, although the offensive line is starting to change that.
Yet, the crazy thing about Michigan football, which had the most players drafted this past weekend, and has the most over the past two draft classes, is that the Wolverines seem to specialize in developing players at all positions.
For starters, 11 of the 13 Michigan football players drafted in the 2024 NFL draft, went higher than their recruiting ranking. That shows right there that Michigan can develop players. Yet, in another really impressive feat, the Wolverines have had at least one player selected at each position over the past three seasons.
The quarterback was one of the positions missing going into the 2024 NFL draft. It had been eight years since a Michigan football QB was selected in the draft at all. But McCarthy became the first, first-round pick at quarterback since Jim Harbaugh.
Yet, when we say position, we aren't just talking about position players. We are talking about special teams too as Jake Moody and Brad Robbins were each drafted in the 2023 NFL draft. Linebacker was the only other position Michigan lacked and that drought ended when Junior Colson went to Jim Harbaugh and the Chargers in the third round.
Michael Barrett also went to the Panthers in the seventh in what will be an absolute steal. He's going to be a core special teams player right away and will find his way on the field. He's too good of a tackler not to get on the field, especially nowadays, when tackling an issue for so many.
Big picture, it was an amazing draft class for Michigan football. It was the best in school history and after having each position drafted over the past three years, it's hard to find a three-year run that matches it.
