A positive sign for Michigan basketball with Jamir Watkins

Michigan basketball will host Jamir Watkins for an official visit and is the only team scheduled to do that right now.

Official visits are always important in recruiting. But when it comes to the transfer portal, visits tend the tell the story even more than in high school recruiting. That should be encouraging for Michigan basketball fans as the Wolverines are set to host the top-ranked player available in the transfer portal according to On3.com, Jamir Watkins.

Watkins is a former Florida State player who declared for the NBA draft but returned to college basketball and withdrew his name last week. Michigan basketball was named as a potential contender at the time along with St. John's.

Watkins is a New Jersey native so St. John's made sense. But Michigan basketball really needs a versatile forward and the former FSU standout would fit the mold perfectly. Watkins, who is 6-foot-7, averaged over 15 points per game last season. He also averaged six rebounds per game along with 2.3 assists and 1.9 steals.

Watkins could be a solid secondary creator for the Wolverines. He also would offer more defensive versatility and could be the answer for the four spot, at least on the defensive end. The idea of Danny Wolf or Sam Walters guarfding athletic fours who can shoot is troubling. Watkins would ease that concern greatly and according to Jon Rothstein, he will visit Michigan basketball.

Rothstein reported that Watkins was going to visit St. John's too. However, Adam Zagoria of Zags Blog reported that Watkins won't visit St. John's which makes Michigan the favorite in my book, as long as Watkins doesn't schedule more visits. He could but doesn't have any right now, which is a really good sign for Michigan, who could use a piece like Watkins in the worst way.
