This won't be a quick fix

Michigan basketball is going to conduct a national search and there should be some attractive candidates. But there are issues at a school like Michigan. For one, admissions are a problem, especially when the transfer portal is such a critical roster tool. It makes it very difficult to build a team when you are limited to freshmen and graduates in the portal.

The Wolverines also aren't know for their NIL prowess. That does seem to be improving but remember, Michigan is more of a football school. This isn't Kansas or Kentucky, so the idea of landing Jay Wright or someone like that is just too far-fetched.

It's not going to be easy to find the next Beilein either. He was one of a kind. Maybe the Wolverines should see if they can get him out of retirement, although I'm not sure he'd love coaching basketball in this transfer portal era.

The transfer portal opens Monday. Michigan basketball needs a head coach as soon as possible, but getting this program back to where it was -- during the Golden era -- might not be possible.

I'd like to see Michigan hire a proven winner. Someone who knows how to coach defense and has won without landing a bunch of elite recruits. You need someone like a Fred Hoiberg -- someone along those lines who can get good players but also make good players better.

It's going to be a long road back to national prominence, but at least the Wolverines ripped of the band aid.
