Michigan basketball is halfway to winning a national championship, but the Wolverines got some news on Saturday that will help them be a contender once again in 2026-27.
Five-star freshman, Trey McKenney has had a bigger impact than some expected this season, especially in the NCAA Tournament. as we predicted. The backup guard has been a sharpshooter for the Wolverines. He's done it all season long, but has turned it on during March Madness.
McKenney is scoring 11.6 points per game and making 50 percent of his 3-point attempts. He looks like a superstar. That might have caused some to wonder if he would be back next season for Michigan basketball.
There is always a concern about the transfer portal, especially after Dusty May revealed that one of his players was already getting contacted by other schools, or the NBA draft, because the freshman is that good, but according to Tony Garcia of the Detroit Free Press, McKenney will be back in Ann Arbor for his sophomore season.
Trey McKenney says he will be back for Michigan basketball
Garcia posted that McKenney will "definitely" be back next season. That's massive news for the Wolverines, who are guaranteed to lose Yaxel Lendeborg, a National Player of the Year finalist, Nimari Burnett, Roddy Gayle, and Will Tschetter.
3/5 of the Michigan starting lineup is made up of players with years left to play. You'd think Elliot Cadeau will be back. The question marks are Aday Mara and Morez Johnson. Like Yaxel, they have been projected as first-round picks in the NBA draft.
Lendeborg could have been a first-rounder in the 2025 NBA draft, but chose to play for Michigan instead. Maybe Mara or Johnson will do the same. Either way, McKenney will be a cornerstone for Dusty May, and if Cadeau is also back, that's a hell of a starting point for the 2026-27 roster.
